Torn between wanting to ‘enjoy’ the holiday with our friends and family, and wanting to invest in the work involved, the organizers have made it possible to do both, they offer both long-term and short-term opportunities.
Last summer we signed up for a 2-hour commitment on the inflatable toys, and
were prepared to be asked to ‘do just a little more.’ To our surprise, we were having so much fun at our ‘job’ that the time was up before we knew it. Our organizers saw to it that we were free to keep track of our kids and enjoy the events and activities for the rest of the day.
The next morning I had planned on sleeping in and enjoying my day off of work. But I felt compelled to get up, get in my car and drive back to the park to be part of the clean up committee. Not out of a sense of guilt, but because I was moved and motivated by the ‘spirit’ in the ‘Spirit of America’ committee.
